What is Federated Searching?

A federated searching is a data retrieval service which can perform a cross-sectional search on multiple search engines and display the results collectively. To implement this capability, a federated search server program and a client program must be installed on each of the servers. The search engine will be installed based on the SQI (Simple Query Interface) specifications. Data transfer will be done in XML format.

The National Institute of Multimedia Education (Japan) formulates a Global Learning Object Brokered Exchange (GLOBE) with 4 services around the world. These are, ARIADNE (EU), education.au limited (Australia), LORNET (Canada), and MERLOT (USA).
This global network allows sharing of index information of learning resources available from each individual service. We aim to establish a cross-sectional search database allowing users to locate necessary contents from all over the world.
